Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have a very broad applications in gas adsorption/separation, catalysis and energy storage. Its pore size and pore opening are two important structural features that affect the properties of these crystalline nanoporous materials. The size of pore opening determines the size of the guest molecules which can enter the pore, and the pore size determines the number of guest molecules. Therefore, precise control of pore size and pore opening has always been the key in controllable design synthesis of MOFs. Here, we will introduce several synthetic methods and design concepts in mesoporous MOFs, including the iso-reticular method and the newly discovered multi-component construction method. In addition, we will also provide some mesoporous MOF applications in catalysis, separation and biomolecules loading.
